Sister and BIL Weekend

Colleen and Adam planned a fabulous Pacific Northwest tour this summer, with stops in Portland and Seattle and Anacortes.  (Hmmm… which of those three is not like the other? 😉  We were so happy that they managed to leave Powell’s Books and Pike Place Market for a few days to come see boring old us.  I think Tally was definitely the selling point; by the time they got to us, they were seriously missing their pup Lucy and loved snuggling with a puppy-niece.  (They even got a double-dog-dose because our friends’ dog Angel was staying with us.)

They arrived on Friday afternoon, with a bounty of goodies from the markets and vegan bakeries they’d hit earlier in their trip… fresh sourdough and ciabatta bread, berries, Beecher’s cheese, the world’s largest bouquet of fresh flowers from Pike Place, Mighty-O Donuts, amazing orange and pink peppercorn olive oil from Sotto Voce, and enough pastries and sugary treats to open their own bakery.  Colleen and I made a quick run to the grocery store to find some protein to grill (brats for NavyGuy and I, veggie dogs for Sister and BIL).  We had a super relaxed evening at home, eating, doing laundry, and watching So You Think You Can Dance.

Bright and early Saturday morning, Colleen and Adam went for their morning run, and then sis and I ran to the Anacortes Farmers Market for coffees and breakfast snacks for our ferry ride to Friday Harbor.

Waiting for the ferry.

It was insanely windy so we didn’t spend much time on the boat deck – just long enough to snap a quick pic of Sister on the water.  Our plan was to spend the afternoon wandering the shops and sights in the town.  Because it was a holiday weekend, the area was jam packed – NavyGuy smartly went right away and got the car in line to get back on the ferry.  When all four of us reconvened, we grabbed some lunch (at the world’s slowest coffee shop), and ate by the water.

NavyGuy and I in the sunshine.  After lunch we checked out a few shops and an art gallery.

Sporty garden art.

The most aptly described shop on the island… there was even a full bear skin rug, which could be considered both funk and junk.

Adam was tempted to take velvet Jesus home to display in the master bedroom.  (Alas, Colleen vetoed the purchase.)

Queuing up for the ferry ride back to Anacortes.

Adam did some lawyer work and NavyGuy studied on the trip back, but Colleen and I entertained ourselves with one of the random puzzles floating around the ferry.  Sadly, it was missing many pieces and the ride wasn’t quite long enough for us to finish our masterpiece.

Saturday night we dined at Adrift and watched an HBO documentary about the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic church; Colleen and Adam had heard about it, and it was fascinating.  I remember when it was in the news years ago, but never paid much attention – just unbelievable events.

Sunday was another relaxed day – the last one before Colleen and Adam had to go home and back to work.  Colleen and I visited the Lululemon Outlet Store in Burlington, so she could stock up.

We also went to Deception Pass, and the look out point on Mt. Erie.

We love having them visit and are crossing our fingers that they can make the Northwest a yearly trip!  🙂
